Air Mass Meter not working Empty Air Mass Meter not working

How do you know if the Air Mass Meter on your vehicle is already faulty? My 93 Toyota Camry is having difficulties starting up, and when it does start up, it keeps making this sound as if its backfiring. The muffler shop I went to took a look at it and they said that the problem might be coming from the air mass meter, but I'm not sure. Help?
